Mercedes-AMG GT R Reliability Rating As with many low-volume, high-priced performance cars, the AMG GT has not been evaluated by the IIHS or the NHTSA, but Mercedes has a brilliant reputation for building safe cars, and the same should hold true when it comes to the GT's crash structure. US NHTSA Crash Test Result NHTSA safety ratings are not available at this time. 2020 AMG GT R Key Safety Features The AMG GT R is decidedly light on active safety features. Standard features include eight airbags, a three-stage electronic stability program, traction control, tire-pressure monitoring, LED headlamps and daytime running lamps, a rearview camera, Parktronic, and adaptive braking technology. While there is attention assist and collision prevention, you will have to pay extra for blind-spot monitoring and lane-keeping assist. Mercedes have revealed their new Safety Car that will be at the front of the grid for the upcoming 2022 season. The German manufacturer has a long history of supplying safety and medical cars and since 2019, they have supplied the Mercedes-AMG GT R as the Safety Car. That will now be replaced by the Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series for half the races as Mercedes continue to share Safety Car duties with Aston Martin, just as they did last year. In addition, the AMG GT 63 S 4MATIC+ will be used as the medical car for the season. CEO of Mercedes-AMG GmbH, Philipp Schiemer, said the there was âno questionâ they would extend their 25-year partnership with F1. Introducing the new official @fia Safety Car and Medical Car for the 2022 @F1 season! â€ïžđ€© Loving the @MercedesAMG GT Black Series and the AMG GT 63 S 4MATIC+ đ â Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS F1 Team (@MercedesAMGF1) March 8, 2022 âRecent years have seen Mercedes-AMG celebrate a huge number of amazing successes in the FIA Formula One World Championship. Eight constructorsâ titles and seven driversâ titles in the last eight years speak emphatically for themselves,â he said in a statement. âAdded to that is the extensive and widespread transfer of technology and image from this greatest of all motorsport stages and our series-production vehicles. âMotorsport means so much to us, as does the best possible level of safety. There was absolutely no question that, after more than 25 years, we would extend our commitment as the provider of the safety car and medical car â with two absolutely outstanding vehicles from our line-up.â The Safety Car will be driven by Bernd Maylander who has driven it since 2000 and the 50-year-old said he was âso happyâ to be back behind the wheel once more. âIâm so happy that I will once again be at the wheel of the Formula 1 safety car for the 2022 season,â he said. âAnd Iâm especially pleased that this year itâs a Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series. Iâve already had the chance to test this amazing vehicle many times and Iâm simply blown away by how close it is to a thoroughbred race car. âIt really is a major step compared to last yearâs GT R â which was already at an extremely high level. To have a workplace like this in the name of safety is a dream come true.â The cars themselves are much like the base models available to customers but have been customised to fit the needs of F1. At the front, three small orange light modules and one large green module are positioned on each side of the AMG logo, level with the sun visors which will be used in various points throughout a race. The rear number plate can also be illuminated in either orange or green in synch with the safety lights. Inside, the car has been fitted with a roll cage made from bolted tubular titanium.

Mercedes-AMG has presented a new livery for its GT R FIA Formula 1 safety car, which incorporates design elements that symbolize unity and the sportâs commitment for diversity and inclusion. The car will be seen at the 2020 Austrian Grand Prix this weekend, with rainbow visuals and the âWeRaceAsOneâ hashtag that will be featured on all F1 cars and around the racetrack. The âDrive Safelyâ lettering will continue to adorn the hood, reminding fans âto always drive in a careful and considerate wayâ. Power comes from the twin-turbo V8 that pumps out 577 HP (585 PS / 430 kW) and 520 lb-ft (705 Nm) of torque, rocketing it to 62 mph (100 km/h) in seconds from a standstill (0-60 mph in sec) and up to a top speed of 198 mph (318 km/h). In addition to the GT R safety car, the official FIA F1 medical car, the AMG C63 S Estate, has embraced the new design that comprises of the rainbow flag and âWeRaceAsOneâ hashtag, and will head over to Austria this weekend too. If â22 cars are genuinely a lot faster than before the black series would have been a must have as the safety car. It not only has a huge power increase over the GT-R but also the Aero gains are huge. Of course this is only relevant if the Safety car driver is allowed to use said gains.
Mar 20, 2018 at 5:59am ET The wait is almost over as the 2018 Formula 1 season will kick off this weekend with the Australian Grand Prix in Melbourne. For the 23rd consecutive year, Mercedes-AMG will be in charge of providing the official Safety Car for the most important motorsport event of them all. The long-lasting tradition started back in 1996 with the C36 AMG, and now for 2018, the GT R is ready to claim the title for the most powerful F1 Safety Car of all time. Update: Mercedes-AMG Developing Lighter, Track-Focused GT R "Clubsport" Mercedes-AMG Spotted Testing Updated GT R At The Nurburgring Armed with a biturbo V8 engine packing 577 horsepower, the GT R follows the lesser GT S version used during the 2015 through 2017 seasons. Once again, behind the wheel of F1âs official Safety Car will be Bernd MaylĂ€nder, who is very eager to drive what he describes as being his new company car: âIt is an absolute highlight in terms of driving dynamics and is one level higher up still than the AMG GT S of recent years. Of course, ideally the safety car should be deployed as rarely as possible â but when we have to safely bunch up the Formula 1 field and lead it around the track, we will be superbly equipped with the AMG GT R.â Compared to a standard GT R, the Safety Car version comes fitted with the optional Track Package encompassing ceramic brakes and a roll-over protection system. The supercar has also received an F1-specific livery and a roof-mounted light bar positioned on an air scoop made from carbon fiber and optimized in the wind tunnel to provide the best possible aerodynamic efficiency. Stepping inside the cabin, Mercedes-AMG has fitted the special GT R with a pair of iPads, with the one on the left showing the live TV broadcast while the one on the right will show an animated display of where the cars are on the track and also the lap times. Other Safety Cars you might like: Aside from dressing the 198-mph GT R in F1 Safety Car attire, Mercedes-AMG will also be in charge of supplying the Medical Car in the form of a C63 S Estate carrying up to three medics. The fast wagon will be in the hands of racing driver Alan van der Merwe joined by FIA F1 deputy medical delegate Dr Ian Roberts on the passenger seat. In the back, one or two assistant medics chosen from a local hospital located near the track will be sitting on the bucket seats fitted with six-point seatbelts. Thanks to its spacious 490-liter trunk, thereâs plenty of room in the trunk of the C63 S Estate for a defibrillator, a respirator, and additional emergency equipment. As a final note, the forthcoming 2018 F1 season will feature 21 race weekends and will come to an end on November 25th with the Abu Dhabi finale at Yas Marina. Mercedes-AMG will use the most powerful Official FIA F1 Safety Car of all time in the 2018 Formula 1Âź season: the 430 kW (585 hp) AMG GT R will have its debut as the Official FIA F1 Safety Car of the FIA Formula 1 World Championship at the Grand Prix in Melbourne, Australia from 25 to 27 March 2018. The top-of-the-line model of the AMG GT series will ensure maximum safety for the Formula 1 field on all 20 race weekends. The performance and sports car brand from Affalterbach has supplied the pace car in the premier racing series of international motorsports since 1996. With an output of 430 kW (585 hp) and a top speed of 318 km/h, the AMG GT R is the most powerful and fastest Official FIA F1 Safety Car of all time: In this, the 23rd consecutive year, Mercedes-AMG will safely lead the Formula 1 field around the track when bad weather or accidents require its deployment. The AMG GT R is the ideal Official FIA F1 Safety Car, with the driving dynamics of the AMG GT3 racing car, and having spent a large part of its development time in the "Green Hell" of the NĂŒrburgring. "I am very much looking forward to my new company car. It is an absolute highlight in terms of driving dynamics and is one level higher up still than the AMG GT S of recent years. Of course, ideally the safety car should be deployed as rarely as possible â but when we have to safely bunch up the Formula 1 field and lead it around the track, we will be superbly equipped with the AMG GT R", says Bernd MaylĂ€nder, who will again be the driver of the Official FIA F1 Safety Car in the new season. Never before has Mercedes-AMG packed so much motorsport technology into a production vehicle as into the AMG GT R. The front-mid-engine concept with transaxle, the powerful V8 biturbo engine, the elaborately designed chassis, the sophisticated active aerodynamics and the intelligent lightweight construction lay the foundations for an especially dynamic driving experience. Wide front and rear wings allow an increased track width for optimum grip and even higher cornering speeds. The front apron with AIRPANEL active air control system and the active aerodynamics profile in the underbody, the large rear aerofoil and the rear apron with double diffuser increase the aerodynamic efficiency and help ensure optimum grip. The lightweight forged wheels are likewise designed for maximum driving dynamics. The same applies to the active rear-wheel steering, the nine-way adjustable traction control system and the adjustable coil-over suspension with additional electronic control. As a result, the AMG GT R offers the optimal prerequisites for the tough job in the premier class of motorsports. The requirements profile of the FIA (FĂ©dĂ©ration Internationale de lâAutomobile) for the Official FIA F1 Safety Car is demanding. It must be able to maintain a minimum speed level to prevent the tyres and brakes of the Formula 1 vehicles from excessive cooling and the engines from overheating. With a top speed of 318 km/h and seconds for the sprint from zero to 100 km/h, the AMG GT R poses no risk for this to happen. Official FIA F1 Safety Car largely in standard specification The Mercedes-AMG GT R clearly has racetrack performance in its genes, as only a small number of modifications were required to transform it into the Official FIA F1 Safety Car of the FIA Formula 1 World Championship. The AMG Track Package with roll-over protection system and the ceramic high-performance compound braking system are on board as optional extras. The advantages of the ceramic brakes are a lower weight, a longer service life and even better fade resistance. In terms of appearance, the Mercedes-AMG GT R Official FIA F1 Safety Car differs from the series production vehicle above all by virtue of the FIA and F1 car film and the light bar on the roof. The latter is positioned on a carbon-fibre air scoop that is designed to offer the least possible air resistance while at the same time providing for an aerodynamically optimised flow of air towards the rear aerofoil. The positioning and design of the carbon-fibre air scoop and the light bar are the result of extensive wind tunnel tests. While Official FIA F1 Safety Car driver Bernd MaylĂ€nder focuses on the track and at the same time keeps an eye on the field in the rear-view mirror, co-driver Richard Darker maintains radio contact with race control. Richard Darker monitors the Formula 1 vehicles by means of two iPads. The display of the left one shows the international TV broadcast. The right one can feature either an animated display of the current position of the vehicles or show current lap times. Data management for the visual communication solutions is handled by an InCar Hotspot with WLAN wireless network. Charlie Whiting, FIA F1 Director, says: âWhen a Safety Car intervention is required during a Grand Prix itâs vitally important that we have full confidence in the carâs ability to lead the Formula 1 cars around the track safely. That means we need a car which is not only capable of dealing with the extreme demands a Grand Prix circuit puts on a vehicle travelling at high speed, but also one which is capable of setting a pace that allows the F1 drivers to keep tyres and brakes working at the right kind of temperature so that they do not struggle while waiting for racing to resume. With the latest versions of the FIA F1 Medical and Safety Cars, that confidence is once again assured.â Fast emergency care with the Mercedes-AMG Official FIA F1 Medical Car Alongside the safety car, the Mercedes-AMG C 63 S Estate is on hand to provide emergency care as the Official FIA F1 Medical Car of the FIA Formula 1 World Championship. It is crewed by up to three medics. At the wheel is racing driver Alan van der Merwe, whilst his co-driver is FIA F1 deputy medical delegate Dr Ian Roberts. The rear seats accommodate one or two assistant medics from a selected specialist hospital near the particular racetrack. For perfect occupant support and safety, the speedy estate is fitted with four sports bucket seats including six-point seat belts. Radio equipment enables communication with race control. To enable monitoring of racing activities, two iPads including InCar Hotspot and WLAN wireless network are also installed in the cockpit. The 490-litre luggage compartment safely accommodates the full complement of emergency equipment, including defibrillator and respirator. The Official FIA F1 Medical Car follows the Formula 1 field on the starting lap, as the racing cars are grouped particularly closely together in this critical phase of the race. In the event of an incident, the medics are thus able to reach the scene of the accident as quickly as possible and administer first aid immediately. During the race, the Official FIA F1 Medical Car is lined up alongside the Official FIA F1 Safety Car in the pits lane. As on the Official FIA F1 Safety Car, the V8 biturbo engine with an output of 375 kW (510 hp), the AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 9G transmission, the dynamic engine mounts and the electronically controlled limited-slip rear differential are on the same high level as the street-going version. Mercedes AMG GT R safety car with racing technology âI'm really looking forward to my new company car. In terms of driving dynamics, it is an absolute highlight and one step higher than the AMG GT S of previous years. Of course, the safety car should be used as little as possible - but if we have to bring the Formula 1 field together safely and lead around the circuit, then we are well equipped with the AMG GT R, âMaylĂ€nder enthused about his new toy /p> The Mercedes AMG GT R was developed on the Nordschleife. So he should be prepared for all conditions that await him during a season. The front mid-engine concept with a transmission in transaxle design, the V8 biturbo engine, the adjustable chassis with electronic control, the active aerodynamics and the consistent lightweight construction provide a racing feeling in the series athlete. Zur Wider front and rear fenders, which enable a larger track width, also contribute to increased driving dynamics. Compared to the previous model, the front and rear aprons have also been changed. In addition, there is a large rear wing that generates extra contact pressure. Further sport features of the AMG GT R are its light forged wheels, the active rear-axle steering and the nine-way adjustable traction control. Special equipment for use as a safety car From the AMG The range of accessories also includes the track package with rollover protection system and a ceramic high-performance brake. As a special safety car, the AMG GT R also received a striking foil, an aerodynamically optimized light bar for the roof as well as two large displays, a radio system and an InCar hotspotMissed WiFi network in the interior. In addition to the Mercedes AMG GT R Safety Car, Mercedes is again sending a 510 hp AMG C63 S T-model as a medical car on the Grand Prix Tour. The fast station wagon was equipped with four bucket seats for its special purpose. All emergency equipment including defibrillator and ventilator is stowed in the 490 liter trunk. In the gallery we show you the new Mercedes AMG GT R safety car for the 2018 F1 season in detail.

A new era is opening up for Formula One this season with completely new technical regulations, completely new aerodynamics and a totally new look for the cars, which means in essence a new beginning for motorsport's premier class. However, two things will remain the same as F1 embarks on the latest stage in its development in Bahrain March 20 - Mercedes-AMG will again ensure maximum safety out on the race track this year by providing the Official FIA F1 Safety CarÂź and the Official FIA F1 Medical CarÂź. The safety car with the three-pointed star has been a constant feature for 26 years now, and during that time, high-performance models, including the Mercedes-Benz CL 55 AMG, the Mercedes-Benz C 36 AMG and the spectacular SLS AMG gullwing specially developed by Mercedes-AMG, have all been utilised. This upcoming F1 season is now set to mark a premiere when the Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series (fuel consumption combined: l/100 km, CO2 emissions combined: 292 g/km)Âč leads the field as the safety car. At the same time, the Mercedes-AMG GT 63 S 4MATIC+ (fuel consumption combined: l/100 km, CO2 emissions combined: 308-295 g/km)Âč will make its debut as the medical car. These two F1 safety vehicles about to be deployed this season will be the most powerful ever used and will sport the same distinctive red livery as last year. The new Official FIA F1 Safety CarÂź: The Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series The FIA's list of requirements for the safety car is a tough one to fill with high cornering speeds, the ability to produce dynamic intermediate sprints and fast lap times all number one priorities. The AMG GT Black Series has the ideal prerequisites for this demanding role at the pinnacle of motorsport. This flagship model can produce 537 kW (730 bhp) and was developed specifically for the race track. There is currently no street-legal AMG model on offer that is more like an out-and-out racing car. The thing that strikes you most about this year's safety car, though, is the complete lack of the customary light bar on the roof. The reason for its absence has a simple explanation. Since it would have interfered with the sophisticated aerodynamics of the AMG GT Black Series, development engineers at Affalterbach had to come up with something new. The lights needed for signalling are now integrated into the upper part of the windscreen while at the rear, they have been neatly integrated into the rear wing. Low consumption, fast-reacting LEDs are used for all signalling functions. The headlights and car's rear lights also flash at regular intervals in order to catch drivers' attention. â Bernd MaylĂ€nder, driver of the safety car since 2000 I'm delighted to be back behind the wheel of the Formula 1 safety car again for the 2022 season "And I'm particularly pleased this year to be in a Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series. I've already had the chance to test this amazing vehicle on numerous occasions and I'm simply blown away by how close it is to a thoroughbred racing car. It really is a major step forward compared to last year's GT R which was already at an extremely high level. To have a workplace like this in the name of safety is a dream come true." While MaylĂ€nder has to focus on the track ahead when the safety car is called out while observing what is happening in his rear-view mirror at the same time, co-driver Richard Darker is responsible for maintaining radio contact with race control. Darker must also watch the race action on two screens and follow a 'marshalling system', showing the flag signals on each section of track. There's also a 'medical warning light'. In the event of an accident on the track that exceeds a critical g-force threshold, the LEDs flash several times. This provides Bernd MaylĂ€nder and Richard Darker with an additional warning to prepare for action. The new Official FIA F1 Medical CarÂź: The Mercedes-AMG GT 63 S 4MATIC+ Kraftstoffverbrauch kombiniert: - 13 l/100 km | CO2-Emissionen kombiniert: 308 - 295 g/km | Emissionsangabe [1] Apart from the Official FIA F1 Safety CarÂź, Mercedes-AMG will also again provide the Official FIA F1 Medical CarÂź for the 2022 Formula One season, as the Mercedes-AMG GT 63 S 4MATIC+ is set to take over from its predecessor, the C 63 S AMG T model (combined fuel consumption: l/100 km, combined CO2 emissions: 246 g/km) and make its debut in motorsport's premier class. With its V8 biturbo engine giving a maximum output of 470 kW (639 hp), the new medical car will be the most powerful and fastest ever seen since F1 records began. Designed to give maximum performance out on the race track, the four-door coupĂ© in standard trim can accelerate from zero to 100 km/h in seconds and top out at 315 km/h. As with the safety car, its V8 engine, AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 9G transmission, dynamic engine mounts and rear axle with electronic locking differential are all the same as those used in the road-going version. Another advantage over the rear-wheel drive C 63 S is the fully variable AMG Performance 4MATIC+ all-wheel drive system to ensure optimal traction and maximum driving safety even in adverse weather conditions and pouring rain. The medical car is always on hand to provide speedy emergency care and apart from its driver, FIA Medical Rescue Coordinator Dr Ian Roberts plus one or sometimes even two local doctors from a specialist clinic near the track are generally on board. The medical car closely shadows the F1 field on the starting lap when the racing cars are particularly close together during this critical phase of the race so that in the event of an incident, doctors can reach the scene of the accident as quickly as possible and start administering first-aid immediately. During the race, the Official FIA F1 Medical CarÂź is normally parked in the pit lane next to the safety car. Improving safety for more than 25 years Vehicles from Mercedes-AMG have been improving safety at Grands Prix since 1996, firstly with the Official FIA F1 Safety Car which leads the Formula One field in bad weather or when there's an incident and then with the Official FIA F1 Medical Car which can immediately reach the scene of an accident. "Motor racing means so much to us, as does, of course, the highest possible level of safety," said Philipp Schiemer, CEO of Mercedes-AMG GmbH. "We always took it as understood that after more than 20 years, we would still be supplying both safety car and medical car and we're doing just that with two outstanding vehicles from our portfolio." Christoph SagemĂŒller, Head of Motorsport Mercedes-AMG GmbH added: "To ensure F1's needs are met, we have upped the ante even further for the 2022 season with our most powerful models to date, the AMG GT Black Series and the AMG GT 63 S. What's more, their on-track performance displays their unfiltered motor racing DNA more than any of their predecessors. As always, of course, I hope that these vehicles will be called upon for support as little as possible." Beginning with the F1 season-opening round, the Bahrain Grand Prix at the Bahrain International Circuit in Sakhir on 20 March 2022, Mercedes-AMG will share the challenging duty of providing safety car and medical car with British sports car manufacturer Aston Martin as was the case last year. Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One Team News 2018 NEWS: Introducing the Most Powerful F1 Safety Car Ever! Formula One has a new Safety Car for the 2018 season and it's the most powerful the sport has ever seen The AMG GT R is the quickest Safety Car in the sport's history so far A new Mercedes-AMG Safety Car will be used in the up-coming 2018 F1 season and will debut at this weekend's opening round in Melbourne, Australia. The AMG GT R is the quickest Safety Car in the sport's history so far, with the top-of-the-line model's V8 biturbo engine producing 585hp and powering it to a top speed of 318km/h (198mph). The AMG GT R is the 11th Official F1 Safety Car to have been provided by Mercedes-AMG and replaces the AMG GT S, which was first used in 2015. 2018 marks Mercedes-AMG's 23rd consecutive season leading the F1 field around the race track when wet weather, accidents or debris require its deployment. The powerful AMG GT R features the driving dynamics of the AMG GT3 race car and spent a large part of its development being honed on the "Green Hell", the NĂŒrburgring Nordschleife. It's packed full of the latest high-tech automotive technology It's packed full of the latest high-tech automotive technology, from the AIRPANEL active air control system in the front apron to the rear double diffuser, active rear-wheel steering and nine-way adjustable traction control. All of the improvements and additions help to boost the car's performance and driving dynamics, enabling it to meet the requirements for the tough job of being F1's Safety Car. This includes being able to maintain a set pace that prevents the tyres and brakes of F1 cars from cooling and the engines from overheating. Bernd MaylĂ€nder is the man behind the wheel of the F1 Safety Car and he's joined by co-driver Richard Darker, who maintains radio contact with race control. The interior of the AMG GT R includes two tablet devices, used for monitoring what's going on out on the race track. One shows the live race feed, and the other features vehicle positions and lap times. 'I am very much looking forward to my new company car' "I am very much looking forward to my new company car," Bernd explained. "It is an absolute highlight in terms of driving dynamics and is one level higher up still than the AMG GT S of recent years. "Of course, ideally the safety car should be deployed as rarely as possible - but when we have to safely bunch up the Formula One field and lead it around the track, we will be superbly equipped with the AMG GT R." The AMG GT R is joined by the AMG C 63 S Estate, which is the Official F1 Medical Car and is driven by Alan van der Merwe. His co-driver is F1 deputy medical delegate Dr Ian Roberts, and they are accompanied by one or two assistant medics from a nearby hospital.
Replacing the AMG GT R Safety Car, the Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series Safety Car debuted this year. With a 4.0-litre V8 twin-turbo producing 730 hp, itâs the most powerful F1 Safety Car Mercedes has ever. Donât expect to drive safety cars in racing scenarios. Instead, the F1 22 Safety Cars will be limited to time trials.
Press releaseMercedes-AMG will use the most powerful Official FIA F1 Safety Car of all time in the 2018 Formula 1Âź season: the 430 kW (585 hp) AMG GT R will have its debut as the Official FIA F1 Safety Car of the FIA Formula 1 World Championship at the Grand Prix in Melbourne, Australia from 25 to 27 March 2018.
The Safety Car continued to evolve in 2015, as for the next three seasons MaylĂ€nder would drive the eye-catching Mercedes-Benz AMG GT S-model out on track. However, since 2018, the AMG GT R was a fixture at Formula 1 race weekends. F1 NATION: Mercedes on the move, Astonâs upgrades and 50 years of the Safety Car â itâs our Canadian GP preview

The latest version of F1âs Safety Car is set to be revealed at the Australian Grand Prix next weekend â Mercedes-AMG is bringing its new GT R complete with new F1 logo stickers and flashing lights to head the field should someone drop it into the wall and cause a mess. Mercedes says that the new Safety Car is the most powerful one thatâs ever been used in F1 â it produces 577bhp and has a top speed of 197mph. Still, compared with the current generation of F1 racers and with rumours that Mercedes has almost cracked 1,000bhp with its latest racing engine, driver Bernd MaylĂ€nder will still have to give it full beans even to keep the F1 field circulating slowly. The car is also fitted with an optional AMG Track Pack, which throws in a rollover protection system and high-performance ceramic brakes. Visually, the car is differentiated from the production version by extensive F1-themed stickers and a light bar thatâs been built on top of a carbonfibre roof scoop designed to offer minimal resistance and funnel air through to the rear wing. Inside the car, co-driver Richard Darker has a radio to maintain contact with race control and two iPads that show the television feed and a variety of customisable information displays. âWhen a Safety Car intervention is required during a grand prix itâs vitally important that we have full confidence in the carâs ability to lead the Formula 1 cars around the track safely,â said F1 race director Charlie Whiting. âThat means we need a car which is not only capable of dealing with the extreme demands a circuit puts on a vehicle travelling at high speed, but also one which is capable of setting a pace that allows the F1 drivers to keep tyres and brakes working at the right kind of temperature so that they do not struggle while waiting for racing to resume.â Alongside the safety car, the Mercedes-AMG C 63 S Estate is on hand to provide emergency care as the Official FIA F1 Medical Car, driven by Alan van der Merwe with the FIAâs deputy medical delegate Dr Ian Roberts in the passenger seat. Mercedes AMG have unveiled a brand-new pair of emergency vehicles for the 2022 Formula 1 World Championship that will share duties with Aston Martin's Vantage and DBX this season. Mercedes have supplied safety vehicles for F1 since 1996 and this year's duo sees a major overhaul: Their 2022 Safety Car will be the Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series, (replacing 2021's Mercedes-AMG GT R) featuring a punchy 730hp, adjustable suspension and a number of track-focused features. The headline statistics are a 0-62mph time of seconds and a top speed of over 200mph. The AMG Medical Car is the brand-new Mercedes-AMG GT 63 S 4MATIC+, replacing the C 63 S AMG Estate. The four-wheel-drive Medical Car can hold three medics and their life-saving gear â 639hp at the driver's disposal for a 0-62mph time of and a top speed of 195 mph. PODCAST: Safety Car secrets with driver Bernd Maylander Bernd Maylander, who has been driving the FIA Formula 1 Official Safety Car since 2000, said: âIâve already had the chance to test this amazing vehicle many times and Iâm simply blown away by how close it is to a thoroughbred race car. âIt really is a major step compared to last yearâs GT R â which was already at an extremely high level. To have a workplace like this in the name of safety is a dream come true.â The Mercedes Safety Car includes new light signalling in the windscreen and, unusually, with rear-facing lights in the rear spoiler rather than a roof-mounted lightbar. It will make its debut alongside the Medical Car in the 2022 Bahrain Grand Prix on March 20. As was the case in 2021, Aston Martin will supply their Vantage Safety Car and DBX Medical Car for the upcoming season. The Aston Martins will begin duties in the 2022 Australian Grand Prix at Albert Park. TECH TUESDAY: The missing puzzle piece expected to fall into place during Bahrain testing The DBX Medical Car unleases nearly 550hp and 700Nm of torque, reaching a top speed of 181mph â while carrying the mandated safety equipment including medical kit and fire extinguishers. "It is a continuing source of pride for myself and the whole company to see our cars playing a crucial role in Formula 1," said Aston Martin Lagonda Chief Executive Officer Tobias Moers.
